  History

The annual “BIGSAS Festival of African and African-Diasporic Literatures“ was established in 2011 by Susan Arndt and Nadja Ofuatey-Alazard.

The festival’s aim is to reference the very Babel of texts, sounds and imageries as proposed by African fiction and to reflect on their movement in and beyond Africa. Thus, readings comprise (spoken word) performances as much as prose (short stories and novels). These readings are framed and set into productive dialogues with scholarly contributions such as lectures and panel discussions as well as with art exhibitions, open air concerts and films.

So far, the festival has taken place four times, dedicated to “European Conceptualisations of Europe” in 2011, “Remembering Flash Forward” in 2012 and “Intertextuality. Dialogues in Motion” in 2013 and “Literatures of/and Memories - 1884-1904-1914” in 2014.

The 2015 edition of the BIGSAS Festival of African and African-Diasporic Literatures" in cooperation with the 2015 Annual Conference of the African Literature Association is entitled "African Futures and Beyond. Visions in Transition" and will takeplace in the city center of Bayreuth. Venues are the Bayreuth City Hall, the Old Castle ("Altes Schloss") and the Iwalewahaus.

  ALA-Coop 2015

In cooperation with the ALA2015 conference, the BIGSAS Festival of African/-Diasporic Literatures 2015 will take place for the 5th time and complement the academic ALA conference program (on the campus of the University of Bayreuth) with literary readings , spoken word and theatrical performances, round tables and a concluding concert (all open to the public and held in the Bayreuth city center).

Many of the invited artists represent the younger generation in African/-Diasporic literatures, art, music and performance, spanning genres, crossing media and representing new approches in culture and education. This cooperation between ALA and Literature Festival, which bridges the gap between the academic - oriented conference program and the both academically and culturally - oriented festival program also operates under the title "African Futures and Beyond . Visions in Transition". This year the BIGSAS literary festival focusses in particular on young/younger writers who also work in new genres such as science fiction literature and crime fiction. Musically the BIGSAS Literature Festival 2015 plans to welcome the internationally renowned young Nigerian-German singer/songwriter Nneka to its’ concert stage.
